Teaching has long been recognized as one of the most rewarding careers because of the opportunity a teacher has to help mold and engage young minds. Now, even if you have a full-time job, you can get your education degree online to teach and become involved in a rewarding and exciting career. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards recognizes that an online education degree from an accredited school is a comparable education to a degree from a traditional school, and may even use the same curriculum.
Online degrees in education are offered at all levels, from associate degrees to PhDs. With an associate degree in early childhood education, you can become certified to teach at the pre-K level. If you want to teach at the elementary, middle, or high school level, all public schools require a minimum of a bachelor degree, according to the regulations of the No Child Left Behind act. In addition to a bachelor degree, most states require a board certification.
There are a variety of different kinds of online education degrees. If a person wants to teach at the elementary education level, they can get an elementary education degree, which covers elementary education broadly and generally; for teaching in grades K – 6 in a variety of subjects, including math, social studies and language arts. However, not all teachers want to be general education teachers, and many school districts are leaning toward team teaching. Team teaching occurs at all grade levels when a team of teachers with specialty certificates work together on rotating schedules with several classes of children, each teaching their certified specialty.
Some of the specialty degrees that online schools offer in elementary education are reading and literacy, mathematics, and the sciences. Reading specialists are becoming more important in schools as educators realize the critical nature of literacy to all learning. A reading specialist may work within schools to improve literacy or reading programs, as well as implement assessment programs to determine levels of literacy for individuals, classes, or even whole schools.
For students who are interested in mathematics and the sciences, the prospects in education are very good. Online colleges offer specialized degrees in math and the sciences at all teaching levels. These types of specialists are highly sought after in all school districts, and may be eligible for special loan forgiveness on federal student loans if certain requirements are met, up to ,500. Some states are in such need of math and science teachers that they have special certification programs for people who hold bachelor degrees in those subjects. They will allow holders of these bachelor degrees to teach while they are in the process of attaining their teaching certificate. Online colleges can help these much-needed teachers with certification programs that they can complete after their teaching day is completed, offering a flexibility that regular colleges can’t.
Although many people dream of teaching at the elementary school level, not all teachers prefer that age range. Some teachers really love working with teenagers, even though it may be challenging at times. An education degree from an online school that focuses on upper level education for middle and high school can cover many topics that will help teachers with the challenges that they will face with teens, like adolescent education. Additionally, online schools also offer specialized degrees and certificates in other subjects like literature or history for middle and secondary school.
While the goal of most people who get an education degree is to teach, not all education degrees are aimed at teaching. Online colleges also offer degrees and certification programs in educational areas that focus on the administrative side. All schools and school districts need good administrators, and an online degree in education administration, library management, or educational leadership, as well as curriculum development, can help lead to an administrative career in education.
